Hey guys , Got a question for you all. Looking at a 44 WFC barrel, 24″ octagon. It has the king improvement lineage  on top the barrel.  The outside diameter of the octagon barrel is is about.930 from side to side.. Is this the normal diameter size of a 1873 44-40  barrel?  With that mentioned, did they make 1873 44-40 barrels with smaller diameters . I Have a 44WCF octagon barrel with no markings except for caliber marking where the barrel screws into the receiver Could this be a 1892 barrel?

.930″ at the breach is on the small side of a 44 barrel. All Winchester barrels should have barrel addresses on them unless worn or buffed off. Post a picture of the caliber mark and if you can’t email it to me, it might shed light on what it came from. The made the smaller calibers with smaller diameters.

Here are the pictures. The one on the gun is a original 73 barrel but its been rusted and cleaned. The other barrel you said only has a caliber mark and no barrel address but the one you sent me I see a barrel address. What is the length and on what flat is the barrel address?

Bob,

The unknown barrel is a Model 1892 barrel… the patent date is the clue.

Thank you Bob & Bert for your help. When it comes to Winchesters I am pretty new to this, I have a few that I bought along time ago, when I didn’t know anything about them. Was always interested in history, and of the old west, now retired , I am getting into them an learning about them more since I have the time to do so. Will look for some books on the 73’s. Thanks again, I do appreciate it!
