Moose,

The first thing you should do is contact the Cody Firearms Museum and get a factory letter for it. That stated, if your Model 1873 is not a 44 WCF, the odds are extremely high that it is not a 1 of 1000.

Moose,

Everyone I have recorded is a 44 caliber. What is the serial number? You can send me some pictures and I can probably tell you what you have.

Give us the complete serial number and I can look it up in the 1 of 1000 book by Ed Lewis.  I believe that Ed states only 1 38 WCF 1 of 1000 was made. It was made for the Browning Bros. in Ogden, Ut. in 1892.  It has a half round barrel and a swiss buttplate with cheek piece.  Ser. #435498.

I did have that one but must of missed it when I did the search.

I talked to Moose and he sent me some pictures. He will be selling it as a fantasy gun. It does have a serial number on it that is a 1 of 1000 but its the wrong style numbers.

Here are the particulars on the gun. Its gun has serial 60758 on it which letters to a 1 of 1000,  26″ octagon barrel, 44 cal, set trigger, case hardened, pistol grip and checkered wood. The gun is a third model 38 with straight grip, no set trigger, octagon barrel and I think he said it was 30″ long. The serial number is the wrong style for the a second model of that era and has a new barrel with gold band instead of platinum. Bore is like new. Here are the pictures.

So, somebody intentionally made a fake 1 of 1000 using a “correct” serial number, but with nothing else correct ?  One has to wonder why someone would go to the effort of choosing a true 1 of 1000 serial number, but then not match anything else ??

I can’t figure that one out either. The only thing I can think of is he would of had to start with a pistol grip second model and that was out of his budget since theirs not that many of them. 84 pistol grips out of 2117 second models in my survey
