Last year I bought a Winchester model 1866 musket from 1870. The gun has some extra markings. A capital “G” and the number “17” on the budplate and the number “151” on the left side of the receiver. In 1870, the French gouvernment bought Winchester muskets and a number of these guns were issued to the 17th Legion of the Gendarmerie at the isle of Corse. So my guess is that my gun is one of those muskets that were sold to France in 1870. Does anyone of you have photo’s of these specific muskets with similar markings? Other comments?
