Hi: I am looking at an 1866 carbine that appears to have had the barrel changed.  There is a 44 stamped on the barrel next to the receiver Can some tell me if any caliber markings were stamped on the 1866 rim fire carbine barrels or is thai a 1873 replacement?. The serial Number 163,000 puts it made in the 85-86 range.  Thanks  Al

Thanks for the info. After a lot of jockeying around I did manage to insert a 44-40 cartridge in the chamber. Getting it back out was even tougher. It did however go all the way to the rim once centered. The bolt did have the double rim firing pin. Anyway the test proves the barrel has been replaced and not original. The barrel marking is 44 only. No other marks are present.  Thanks  Again. You both have been a big help.  Al

It can’t be a 44 WCF since the action can’t feed the longer shell and Winchester never caliber marked the 66 or the early 73’s. If you want to check to see if someone screwed a 73 barrel on it, see if a 44 wcf shell fits the chamber. Otherwise someone must have stamped the barrel 44.

Al, According to the Madis book page 105 & 109 some 66’s after 156,000 had marked barrels “44 R. F.” and by 166,000 all carbines barrels were marked. He also states after 160,000 the elevator maybe marked 44 Cal in script. Pirkle says much the same thing in his book. T/R

Thanks for the info. You both have been a great help. I inserted a 44-40 cartridge in the chamber after a lot of jockeying. It was even harder getting it out. Anyway the cartridge went in easy to the rim once it was centered. That test proves the barrel is not original. The 44 is the only marking on the barrel. No RF or WCF. Thanks Again.  Al

Is the 44 mark old or new. Does it look professionally done or with hand stamps?

Hi Bob: The 44 mark looks professionally done as a gang stamp. the 4’s are 90 degrees to the barrel and 3/4 of an inch ( center of 4’s) from the barrel connection to the receiver. Al
