I inherited a Mod 06 from my Gramps many years ago. Ser 733855, Short, Long and Long Rifle. Stock is dinged up but still shoots like a dream.

Mfg’d around 1926 would be my guess. Am I close? Thank You

Steve,

December 8th 1926 to be precise.

Thanks for posting it,

Bert

Not sure if you have these. 807080 22wrf , 807875 22short ,stainless barrel, full length magazine tube, tang has serial number 807934. The opposite halves of this rifle sold in a Lock Stock and Barrel auction at some point that said reciever 807934 barrel was a stainless 22 short.

If I understand this correctly, you have the back half of the rifle with s/n 807934 with, and barrel assembly 807875 (22 Short Stainless Steel). LS&B sold the opposite halves, also with a 22 Short Stainless Steel barrel.  In summary both 807875 and 807934 when complete were 22 Shorts each with a Stainless Steel barrel.

Thanks… that makes it easier to document them in the survey.

Did you try tracking down the LS&B auction buyer?  In your shoes, that would be my goal… to reunite the mismatched halves.

I haven’t tried yet but I will. I recently acquired this firearm and was surprised when a internet search of the serial numbers located the LS&B auction listing.

Sold recently at RIA:

SN 853399 (no additional letter), SN marked on bottom tang; no markings on top tang.

Barrel is 23″, ROUND, marked “Model 90” & “22 L. Rifle” with crowned (not flat) muzzle.  No markings on underside of barrel other than an indexing mark.  Barrel proof is poorly struck, not clear.  Bore is excellent.

Standard 12-groove slide handle, checkered hammer.

There is a small “W” on the bottom metal, about 1.5″ in front of the trigger guard.

Outer mag tube appears originally intended for a Model 06, as the retaining pin groove is in the white where used for the Model 90, but there is another (unused) groove which is blued at the normal Model 06 position.

Appears to be a pretty late parts cleanup model, WACA lookup gives 1940 SN application date.

Hope this helps, happy to answer any further questions.

Would it be possible to send me a picture of the “W” marking?  Per the PR records, this rifle was manufactured November 13, 1940, and it is definitely a parts clean-up rifle.

Thanks,

Bert

Here’s the bottom of the Model 90, with a closeup of the area with the “W”.

Thanks!!

That “W” is the quality test marking that Winchester used for the new Du-light bluing.  It is found on nearly all models that were in production from February 1939 through February 1941.

Thanks, and I originally documented your Model 06 rifle when it was listed in the December 2006 RIA catalog.

Current count in the survey is 1,347.  Hopefully the article will shake loose at least a few dozen more.

Your Model 90 was manufactured in June 1930, during the regular production period.

Thanks for the information Cool
