Hi Gary,
Cabelas just listed a 20″ 1894 short rifle and thought you would want it included in your survey. Looks like a pretty high condition gun, but a pretty high price, too. Couldn’t quite make out the complete serial number in the photos, so I called the Gun Library and got it for you. Serial number is 182768.

I had this gun in hand a few weeks ago when I was at the Wheeling Cabelas, which is about an hour from my house. It appears that someone put a coat of varnish on the wood, over those dark areas, but other than that, it’s a pretty nice rifle, though a bit pricey in my opinion. Also, I don’t know if it letters as configured.

Interesting survey. I recently purchased an 1894 short barrel rifle. I think it is authentic, but having a hard time proving it. The serial # is 769726 and by that it appears to have been made in 1915, no records available. It does not appear to be cut down as all markings and front sight measurements are correct when compared to my other 26″ 1894 rifle. Does anybody have any thoughts on this rifle?
Bill,
Based on the overall condition of your Model 1894 Rifle, if it wasn’t manufactured with a 20-inch barrel, it was converted to its present condition a long time ago. I do not see anything that would lead me to believe that it is not original.

Don,
Sorry for the super delayed response ……….. finally got it entered. Nice rifle, but too bad the buttstock is oil soaked.
Thanks, as always.

Hello Bill,
With the long wood, and 5″ rear sight placement, that one will always be hard to explain since its out of the letterable range.
