I recently came across an 1894 Winchester First Model rifle in .38-55  here in Canada with serial number 755. The barrel has been changed to a later barrel and so original one is unknown.

An inquiry to Cody may still prove interesting.

Dave,

Does it have a round or an octagon barrel?  The original barrel was a 38-55.

Here’s some photos. I think the barrel has been cut not changed.

It looks like a replacement barrel to me…  The original barrel would not have a proof mark stamp on it, or all of those ugly pipe wrench gouges.

David, please take Bert’s advice.  The barrel is not original nor is the rear sight.  The sight may be original to the replaced barrel.  If this was in original condition it would bring a large premium due to the 3 digit serial number.

Chuck, Thanks for the advice. I am just curious if RickC bought the gun since the photos submitted are not the same as the ones the seller sent me. I know that the barrel with the WP is not original and had advised the seller of the consequences in value a modification to such a rare 1894 would be. Apparently he sold the gun before I could make an offer. I have a first model in my collection already.
