Haven’t seen one. 22″ is usually a 50 caliber length.

Letter does not state caliber so can only assume 45/75. Also no extras stated on letter. believe to be messed with but has been a long time ago as patina is same all over . rear sight I have never seen before on any gun. Grandpa bought bought back in 50s? and has been under a bed ever since as he passed away in 1974.
What is the measurement from the end of the barrel to the center of the front sight dovetail? It looks a little too close to the end.

Yes, if the ledger makes no mention of caliber, it is safe to assume it was shipped as a .45/75. So the letter makes no mention of barrel configuration?

Only states, Rifle, Octagon , Plain trigger. 1881. order number 25119. not alot of info.
no mention of barrel length or caliber would mean it was 45-75 and the standard 28″ length. gun has been cut. the rear sight was extended for better sight radius. smart really instead of cutting a none factory dovetail. someone welded the long flat metal to a 3/8 dovetail base and also tack welded the rear sight part. it looks to be welded just a whisker to the right loading gate side.

roughly .78 of an inch
Thats close to what it should be but with the mag tube a little short and the way it letters it should be a full length barrel and tube.

I agree ,Just odd that someone spent a lot of time and effort to get a heavy or extra heavy half oct. barrel and then put a long rear sight that hugs the barrel for close shots only. But at that time they were not worried about hurting value of gun. Just wondered what they made it for? Never know!
The barrel looks to be a standard weight barrel.

A standard weight is around 15/16 to 1″ at the breech. A extra heavy will have the corners of the flats just about touching the edge of the receiver.
