Not exceptionally rare (a lot of them were printed), but still very desirable because of the subject.

There were 3 versions of the Bear Dogs produced by Winchester.  The most valuable one has printing and other things around all 4 edges and in each corner of the frame.  I would suggest that you contact one of the several people that sell these and have them educate you on what the frame and backing should look like before you buy.   I just saw one for sale in Vegas yesterday for many thousands more that what this one lists for, but is was the rarest of the 3.  I still think this is cheap for a real one??????  Sporting Collectables.com is one seller.  I probably have more info somewhere?

That’s the one with the wooden frame–or it sure looks like wood; can bring 3 or 4 Gs.  But you can find many other prices from past auctions & sales merely by searching under the name of the artist & print; $1200 for this particular one seems about average.  Smaller version also used for a calendar top.

Clarence there are 3 versions of the wood frame.  Sorry I did not make that clearer. If the one in question is real and not molested $1,200 is a good deal for sure.  Here are some pictures.  I am not smart enough to tell which are real.

You mean you think some are repros?  Guess that’s possible, but it would be hard to fake the wooden frame with “for sale here”; the one I presume that was provided to dealers.

There are reproductions and frames broke and were replaced.  Even though it has a wood frame you need to learn what they should look like.  The fancy one you show is not the only one sent to the dealers but it did go to the bigger dealers.  I looked at one of these this last weekend in Vegas.  I think they were asking over $5,000.  This stuff is out of my league but I have a friend that has a large gun room full of these and because of him I always look at this stuff at the major shows.  Look up the Cock of the Woods.  Big turkey.  I’ve seen these go for $10,000.  I have a Winchester authorized reproduction in a frame that  I paid $350.

Look what this one brought…though that was 9 yrs ago:  https://www.morphyauctions.com/jamesdjulia/item/lot-2153-rare-winchester-bear-dogs-print-in-deluxe-original-frame-40303/

Description is especially interesting because it reveals how the “painting” on the frame was done–with decals.
