I’m hoping that there will be a member out there who can help me determine if this Winchester 1906 rifle crate is authentic and the ballpark value. I have seen a few of these shown in an online search. I’ve had this stored away for many years and finally looking into it. I believe it to be authentic and here is the info I have on it:

* Construction looks box joint with hinged lid. The overall condition is pretty good. One of the boards on the bottom is split but not loose. The description on both ends is: 10 Winchester Sporting Rifles Model 1906 Take down .22 Short, Long or Long Rifle.

* Pictured on the inside lid is lettering that says From Wyeth H & M Co. St. Joseph, MO (Missouri). Below it is also lettering that says H.R. Herring Paris, MO. I did some research on both these names. The Wyeth Hardware and Manufacturing Co. was one of the mid-west’s largest wholesalers and manufacturers of hardware, sporting goods and saddlery. In 1909 they had a warehouse that covered 6.5 acres and employed over 500 people. They were one of the main transportation arteries for goods dispersed throughout the Midwest and West coast. The other name H.R. Herring Paris, MO was also a Saddlery Manufacturer and store selling leather products.

Any information and input would be appreciated.

Daren,

Looks like the real deal, no idea of repairs or modifications

Btw appears to be Box joint construction

Ted,

Thanks for your input and I corrected the description to Box joint construction.

Here’s one listed on Guns International to compare to:

Don

Except that crate is not for the Take Down version, which is why Daren’s box is much shorter.

I do believe that the metal hinges were added to the box and not original. Also the two extra pieces of wood acting as a reinforcement I believe were added. I also wonder if the bottom of the box is the original wood, but can’t tell much from the photos.

So other than a few minor things, the box looks mostly original to me.

Sincerely,

Maverick

Up to Canandaigua on holiday a few years ago and stopped at Turnbull’s to look around. There was one or two original, high condition 10 gun crates (maybe Marlin 1894) on the showroom floor. Very clean and solid, no hinges or reinforcing wood. Should have taken a pic or two

Very nice crate.  Looks all original to me, except for the lid being upside down.  The addresses (business names) should be on the outside of the crate.  Undo the hinges and turn the lid over.  The runners you see on the lid should be inside the box, to keep it from moving back and forth.

Except the runners are wider than the inside of the box and wouldn’t fit. Which is why I don’t think they original or factory made to the box.

Yes, I think the runners have probably been replaced and made longer in order to keep the lid in one piece.
