OfflineI have several pictures of a gun rack that was posted online years ago on a facebook group (I did speak to the gentleman that posted it but have no record of the conversation- I apologize if he is in this group!). Can anyone tell from the pics if this was an actual Winchester store rack/display or a vintage custom piece? I have searched several times but have not found another example. Either wa
y it’s a beautiful piece….

Thank you Buck94! Looks like the same rack. Could have been built to look like the one in the auction. I have no dogs in this… I don’t have it for sale…. don’t want to buy it…. I just admired it and was curious. He said it was original in a friendly conversation! Here’s another Pic- you can see the same supports.

OfflineFWIW, The racks look different to me. The base edge is cut differently, one is beveled, one fully angled among other differences.

OfflineThe Richmond rack and the newer (updated?) rack are nice but I’m partial to carbine and shotgun butts. I realize a shelf could be made to accommodate these variants but the simplicity of these racks is intriguing. They would also showcase a Schuetzen butt.
I’m still hopeful someone will undertake the task of building table-top show racks, I wish I had the talent, shop space and equipment to make them. I don’t need one but I know the market is there for a limited supply.

OfflineThe color of the rack, whether stained, fumed, or aged natural, is original or reproduced “Golden Oak” – a historically popular finish for Oak furniture and paneling, particularly for things made or built in the Late Victorian/Edwardian Era, from about 1880 to 1920.
A Golden Oak gun stand as part of a long gun display would be “period correct” and unsurprising for any establishment selling Winchesters during that period.
I am very tempted to add this to my list of things to shop build. The materials cost wouldn’t be cheap if you insisted on quartersawn or riftsawn White Oak in the thicknesses required. The good news is a lathe wouldn’t be needed- I don’t own one.

The one in the Richmond auction is an authentic Winchester gun rack. Take a look on page 709 of the Standard Catalog of Winchester. The other one may be an original that has been re furbished? The original has felt in the notches at the top. Believe me, making the bottom piece where the rifle butts sit isn’t and easy part to make.

Winchester Rarities and the Standard Catalog.

No kidding.
I’d be inclined to make it in sections with a band saw and router table, making a common pre-drilled hole with a template. Then join the sections on a 1/2″ brass rod, plugging the ends with face grain Oak plugs.
You wouldn’t get done with it by suppertime.

OfflineFor the bottom piece, I would be inclined to 3D print a pattern and then use a three-dimensional duplicating wood carving machine to crank out a number of them. Easy Peazy.

OfflineSo Jeff-
So what you’re saying is that all Zeb needs is one of these? This is an old Winchester factory photo.

Salstrom stock duplicating machine c.1950s??? I’m sure he can pick one up CHEAP on eBay…
I would like to have dimensions (of each part) of those racks, just to figure out how to make one… Looks like a fun project for the DIY’er with a wood lathe to go with his/her jig/scroll saw. The wood would be easy… My Brother has a saw mill and we’ve got lots of white oak logs to quarter saw…

Chuck,
Thanks for that, as I looked on page #709, and like you said it’s in there, and the base might be remade, or re worked but that’s definitely it!
Learned something else on this great site!
Thanks,
Tony

I don’t think would it fit in my garage. If it did, there would have to also be enough room for a single mattress and a heater because I would be sleeping out there with it.

Lou,
I think that is a bit extreme but probably similar to what they were made on originally.
No, I was thinking more small scale. These duplicators can be found for less than $1000 and are a fun addition to any wood shop.
If someone can get the dimensions I can throw them into G-code and easily 3D print a pattern for use on a duplicator.
