I am hoping someone can identify this cartridge casing and tell me its significance.
One side says: WINCHESTER REP. ARMS CO. PATENTED AUG. 22, 1899. The other side says: .303 CALIBER-BRITISH. USE .32 S.&W.-SMOKELESS. Thank you for your response!

That looks like a cartridge adapter. You could shoot 32 S&W in a 303

I found the answer to my question Bob. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Interesting, I did not know cartridge adapters existed.

They were once very popular, with several different companies making them. Best type was Brayton’s, sold by Marble’s, which held the aux. cart. at the front of the adapter, so the bullet was close to the rifling. It was fired by a separate firing pin within the adapter.

I always thought the coolest one was the .41 Short Colt in the .405 WCF.

To be more precise Winchester called them “Supplemental Chambers”.
Used for target practice or for hunting small game with a larger chambered rifle. These some what replaced “Short Range” cartridges for a time.
