That looks like a cartridge adapter. You could shoot 32 S&W in a 303

They were once very popular, with several different companies making them. Best type was Brayton’s, sold by Marble’s, which held the aux. cart. at the front of the adapter, so the bullet was close to the rifling. It was fired by a separate firing pin within the adapter.
