I’m reloading a 300 gr bullet 45-70 for an 1886 made in 1910. Can anyone help me avoid disaster with a safe load? At what years would you say they are strong actions or cowboy actions?

Do you have a loading manual? Most address this subject much more thoroughly than we can in this format.

Buy Mike Venturino’s book. Shooting Lever Guns of the Old West. The 1886 has a strong action but heavy loads over time can cause problems. Have a gunsmith check the gun out first. Head spacing is important.
Loads listed for the old 45-70 trap door Springfield rifle, should be okay in the Model 1886, in a good condition rifle.The Model 1886 action is much stronger than the old single shot Springfield rifle.

You are most welcome.I use the 45-70 Springfield loads for my .45-70 Model 1886,even though it has a nickel steel barrel and no doubt would handle heavier loads,I keep it low for use in the old rifle,so as not to put undue strain on the old rifle.
