The weather has been rather grim and foreboding out here in western Washington (lots of strong wind & rain the past few days), so I too spent some time in my “Man Cave” loading. Late last night I loaded (200) fresh (once fired) 9 MM cartridges… 5.0 grains of bullseye under a 115-gr Speer FMJ. I have another 2,800 empties to prep and load (it will be my winter project). After I finish that, I have (300) 38 ACP cases that need to be loaded (for my Colt Model 1902 Military).

5gr of Bullseye seems like a fairly “sporty” round for 9mm.
My mentor Steve Camp passed his recipe (6.2grs Unique under the Sierra 115JHP) along to me when he taught me to reload. I fired a few of those 40+ year old reloads recently. It’s pretty sporty as well, on the par with modern defense loads. In those days (early 1980’s) good defensive 9mm ammo was hard to find. It was more fun to load when I could still hear the powder crunching when the bullet is seated. The few 9mm pistols I’ve used don’t do well with milder loads. I guess that’s why I like my 1911’s, they’re just as happy with BE loads as they are with defensive loads.

It is, but I replaced the factory 13 lb coil wire recoil spring with a 14 lb flat wire spring in my Beretta Model 92F.
