I see Hornady has subsonic ammo for 45-70. Has anyone tried it in an old 86 or trapdoor? T/R

Merely a marketing gimmick from Hornady–all standard cartridges are loaded to be safe in those guns & the only thing I’ve shot in mine. Only exception are those clearly labeled “high-velocity” for use in modern Marlins & some other modern guns.

Tom, subsonic ammo is most commonly used in conjunction with a suppressor. These loads stay about 1100 fps or slower. It is of no value for our old guns. The 45-70 works real well with a suppressor. So if you want to thread one of your barrels and sneak up on varmints and such go for it.
