I’m thinking of picking up a .17 HM2 for some plinking and such. Never had a scope, but was thinking it might be fun to put some glass on this rig. Any suggestions for me to start with? As far as a know (so far), fixed-power might be my initial thought. Typical range of say 100 yards…

If you’re going to use the scope for spotting as well as aiming I’d suggest a minimum of 10X. Those .17″ holes are hard to spot with normal hunting scope magnification.

I bought enough cheap scopes to pay for a couple of VX-3’s before I saw the light. I’m thinking the Vortex is a very good scope but all my modern guns had Leupolds before I started watching them. My Vortex binocs are very good and outperform everything at their price point. I think they have scopes at a variety of price points so I’d research a bit before buying.

I put a Leupold VXII 6X18 on my Mach 2 and am very pleased with it. The scope is not overbearing as far as size and of course the clarity is great. Make sure to get a scope with Paralex adjustment. You would have to go with a used one as they are no longer in production. The Mach 2 has great accuracy potential, When stretching out towards 100 yards with small targets the high magnification really helps with the aim small, scenario. Lower magnification scopes tend to cover your small target with the cross hairs. IE think of a Prairie dog sticking just the top 1/2″ of his head out of the hole at 75 yards or a Starling at a similar range. With the 17’s you will find you really have to “thread the needle” when shooting through limbs. If you touch even a tiny 1/8″ twig, the bullet will NOT find it’s mark.
