I understand that jack hunting was using a lantern (jack light) to hunt deer or other game at night. Apparently it was common in the 19th century but fell out favor and is now illegal in most American states and Canadian provinces.
Lyman even made sights called Jack sights. The #20 sight was a variation of the #3 but had a much larger bead that was easy to see in low light conditions.
Why did jack hunting fall become illegal in the 20th century?

“Why” is easy to answer–because it’s obviously unsporting, deer having no natural fear or instinct to make them escape from the light.
I once had a heavy leather cap with a stiff flat top, on top of which was attached a small oil lamp with a focusing lens handmade by a jacklighter. Bought it in an antique store, & later traded it for a Ballard rifle which I still have.
