Tim,

No I did not have it on back order. I simply ordered it online and they delivered it. I do have an account with them though.

I am definitely not the end all on powders, but have checked all the usual places for IMR 4198 or H-4198 with no success. Looking to help out a friend to whom I reluctantly sold some several years back. Lowered my supply and held him for a few years. Currently I only see a few IMR powders even available. I won't comment on affordability tho! Those are seemingly only available in 1 lb cans, with no 8 pounders available for a couple of years. Seems I also can not back order which is a disturbing sign. My small stash of H-4198 is my strategic reserve. I've used it before with no known problems. It has now been a few years since new stocks of 4198 has been out, so maybe soon we will have new powder hitting the wholesalers? Tim

Tim,

I just bought (2) 1-lb bottles of H4198 from Natchez Shooters Supply. I ordered it last week and it was delivered yesterday.

My understanding is that the H4198 variant is still being manufactured by Hodgdon domestically, and that the IMR powder variants are manufactured in periodic batches at their Valleyfield, Ontario, Canada facility.

I will continue to use the IMR variant for as long as I can still find it. That stated, I did buy a few pounds of the H4198 for back-up (emergency) use. While I might need to tweak a few loads by a few tenths of a grain, my current IMR loads will be my starting point with the H4198.

For the few cartridges I load with 4198 I haven't noticed a difference in performance between the IMR and Hodgdon versions. I'll be trying it in additional cartridges in the future and will continue to treat them as two different powders. Do you know if Hodgdon has plans to discontinue either powder? At today's powder prices it makes no sense to develop a load for a powder that may not be available in a year or two.

In all of the many different cartridges I load with 4198, there is a very minimal difference in the grain weight for the two powders. I personally use them interchangeably. Simply start at or near the minimum load for H41198 and then work up from there.
