It's my impression the sights on some of our old Winchesters are designed for shooting much longer distances than many of us are comfortable with. Some of those guys could really shoot and some of our rifles will surprise us if we are able.

With my group being high left at 130. I think I should have kept the same sight picture.

That’s what you will find with a basic google search on how to use the sight. After shooting the modern ammo and extrapolating for trajectory of the 45-70. My sight picture works for 100-150 yds. I don’t plan on shooting past 75 yds when I’m hunting. I think the top of the buckhorn might put me at 300 to 350 yds. I happen to have some steel plates at 330. So I’ll find out when I get to shoot again.

Anything you hit in the high lung area with that round is not going to travel very far afterward.

I shot the entire box of the lever evolution ftx bullets. I was using a lead sled on the table. The recoil was less than my 20ga 3” slugs in a bolt action savage 220. I’ll have to do some off hand shooting to tell you for sure. I didn’t have any weight on the lead sled, it’s a good rest for zeroing, friction from the feet on the rug and table do reduce your felt recoil. I’ll better answer your question next time I shoot it. The subsonic rounds I still used the lead sled so I could get a good POI shift. I still hit the large 130 yd steel plate with the same hold. Need to put more rounds on paper. I have a really good start though, inside 100 yds I know I’m good.

I don't have any advice to offer on full buckhorn iron sights because I can't use them, except to say they might make an interesting decoration resting among the colorful rocks of a goldfish bowl.

I am curious how the FTX rounds cycled and chambered in your Winchester 1886. And was the recoil mild enough for a young or beginning shooter.

I finally made it to the range today to try out some of my BP loads for my 1885 Miroku Winchester. This load looks promising:

My cast 405 gr plain base gas-checked bullets, LBT white lube, over -power fiber card and 65 gr of Goex 3F powder. This target was from 50 yards with open sights. Obviously, I will need to adjust for elevation, but it looks promising.

I will preface this by saying that my range is my back yard, however setting everything up, shooting, adjusting sights and what have you, the wife was still upset when I came back to the house. Point being, you can't win with a woman, so be happy with your guns.

I recently purchased a 2000s Miroukoo 1886 in 45-70 that I needed to shoot. Last winter I bought a 1950 '94 in 25-35 that I installed a Lyman 66 receiver sight on. My Savage 17HMR needed dialed back in, and the Savage 99E I bought last fall, I'd never confirmed zero on. Also a Sauer SAA 22 Mag that needed some work, that turned into buying a parts pistol, then since I had all the parts, buying another broken one, that I repaired with leftovers, so I had a second in 22LR.

Targets were at 30 yds and 130 yds.

It would be nice if someone could tell me how to use a Full Buckhorn Sight. I'm not sure if I'm right, even after googling instructions. With both sight pictures, I used a 6 O'clock hold. At the 130 yd targets I also had a 12"x17" plate and an 8"x6". I hit the small yellow plate 3 out of 4 with the Hornady. After shooting the subs on paper, I just shot the 12x17 for a good gong ring.

I do know what I'm going to do if I'm still around whenever powder and primer prices inevitably dip down to whatever I perceive is the perigee of that market cycle. It won't ever likely be as low as it last was because there's a ratchet.
However, we have new American and foreign manufacturers streaming in to build factories and those may come on line at a time when the country is no longer exporting ordnance at the current rate. Who knows but there's little new under the Sun and it has happened before, more than once.
If it does, I will buy enough of my favorite powders to last until the most optimistic estimate of my personal sell-by date. Anything left over I'll instruct my executor to distribute among my shooting friends. Here's hoping the leftovers won't be enough to get excited about.

I will take all of the IMR 4064 you can give me... I load 222 Rem Mag, 30-40 Krag, and 30-06 with it.
