And the intrepid hunter is 11 years old. A horse, a dog, a M1892 and some camping gear. Oh, and cartridges – .38-40’s that he cast his own bullets for and loaded himself. What else does an 11-year old boy need for a couple day expedition in the late November Michigan woods?
Does anyone else miss the old days? I first read this story many years ago. It might explain why I have more .38-40’s than .44-40’s.

That was a great read Steve. Hard to imagine an 11 year-old (or even a 20 something year-old) from today being out in the woods on his own like that.

It is hard to imagine, but it was a very different world 120 years ago.

On the same token, it was a simpler world, and less things to consume you’re time. At 20 something years old you were a man with a lot under you’re belt already. IMO! You weren’t coddled and babied as a child either, but raised to respect things and elders and taught things in the wild and to defend yourself in most cases.
I guess I have an easier time understanding it than some.

Hard to imagine a more resourceful eleven-year-old. I don’t have a horse or a dog but I do have an 1892 in 38WCF that needs shooting. Yes, I made the bullets for it!

Steve,What a great story and thanks for sharing. My dad grew up in Troy, Montana a tiny town and he and his brothers learned to be self sufficient at an early age as well. If they didn’t catch it or kill it, many times they sadly didn’t eat. He said they often ate horse meal as it was the cheapest thing they could buy. He also told stories of riding the cargo trains into Spokane Washington which was 4 hours with his 10 year old brother when he was 8. Said the hobo’s always made sure they had something to eat. When he passed I spread some of his ashes on those tracks so he could ride the rails again 😀 Hard to believe what a different world we live in today. See below, where today we arrest parents for letting their kids walk to the store. I had a lot of freedom and I guess my mom would be in prison today and she was a really good mom! God rest her soul!
