Well, it’s time to choose a hunting rifle for deer season. Boiled down to a choice between a couple of deluxe 1895’s. Stay tuned for next week’s episode to see if my choice pays off. Mark

Enjoyed the video once again Mark. Dang, trying to decide between some deluxe ’95s for deer hunting ……. what a wonderful problem to have! Beautiful country, handsome rifles, and a great host … thanks for putting these together.
Heading out for antelope and mule deer next weekend with a good friend and fellow WACA member. No lever guns will be along, but a couple bolt actions that belonged to my father and stepfather. Hoping to shoot something with each rifle in their memory.
Maybe someday I will get a lever gun tuned in and give that a try.

Thanks Gary and best of luck on your hunts! It’s fantastic to have and hunt with guns that belonged to family members. The majority of deer I’ve killed over the years have been with a rifle handed down by my step grandfather. It’s no collector, but it means more to me than any of the collector guns I’ve accumulated. Mark, Great video as always. Beautiful rifles, too! I surely wish my state allowed “modern” rifles for deer, but then I would really have a conundrum figuring which to use. Best of luck on the mule deer! I do believe I have gone west to hunt mule deer my last time, so need to see what you do for my own vicarious satisfaction. And best of luck to Gary and Mark Y. on their hunts as well! Tim
Another great video. I was somewhat confused by your comment about shooting down hill?
When shooting uphill or downhill the correct range is not the straight line distance to your target. It is the horizontal distance. It’s the old saying A squared plus B squared equals C squared. Gravity is only concerned with the A or B whichever is the bottom horizontal distance of the triangle. The shot is always shorter than C. Modern rangefinders use the cosine of the angle to calculate the actually ballistic range. Sorry if I misunderstood what you meant.

Rather than confuse you with my attempt at explaining it (or some would call it – baffling you with BS), here’s a link to Chuck Hawk’s much simpler explanation:
Yes, that is what my BS meant too. I have one of the Leupold TBR rangefinders. There is a device that you can put on your rifle that acts like a bubble level sort of. When the angle of the rifle changes from 0 it gives you a number less than 1. Say your old school range finder says it’s 400 yards and the device says .9 you multiply 400 X .9 and get 360 yds.

Great video, great shooting from an outstanding rifle. Makes the choice easy, waiting for deer season will be difficult. Looking forward to the hunt report!

I had a nice, 85% 1895 tapered octagon barrel, CB in 38-72 that I took a big Whitetail doe with several years ago. Here’s a photo of it …

Its good to see that those old beauties get some sun and see some use. I’m not much for guys that never take them out of the closet and fire them. About like having a prized pure breed retriever that you never take hunting and he just sits at the house. You just know he’s sitting at home waiting to be set lose!
