Some bullets don’t even have a crimp groove.
The originals didn’t for sure!

OfflineYes but I’m not going to paper patch the bullets, either! It happens I was just reading Venturino’s Buffalo Rifle book, specifically the chapter on making and rolling paper patches. Let’s just say it’s a skill I have no desire to acquire.
If I can work my honeydew list down to a respectable degree, my intention [with what road we know is paved] is to learn bullet casting, with TxGunNut’s help.
However, high on the HDL is getting enough stuff out the garage and into the storage shed so I can woodwork in half of it and Higher Authority can park her car in the other half. This may or may not be feasible but she thinks it is. My floor tools are on rollers but still…..
Mike is going to pour some proper bullets for me.

OfflinePoured a nice pile of 457122, first batch was mostly culls as I didn’t take good notes a dozen or so years ago when I used this mould last. As some of you know the Lyman 457122 is a hollow point bullet requiring a few extra steps. It also takes a bit higher pour temp than some similar moulds. I’ll edit to post pics of shiny bullets.

You don’t have to paper patch them either. The process is not hard once you are shown how but the paper you really want is not easy to find.

I am not sure the chamber of this rifle will accommodate paper patch bullets. I know some chambers were cut for PP bullets and I think the method and dimensions vary. I certainly don’t have the patience or manual dexterity to paper patch bullets, wrap presents or prepare sushi.

OfflineI note that Venturino experimented at intervals with patching and never found rounds so assembled quite as accurate as those prepared with lubricating grease. He also confirmed that paper was fairly abrasive and would over time wear the lands of old buffalo rifles.
That being all probably true, I intend to devote what spare time remains to me in pursuit of other skills:
Learning to use the casting equipment my failing friend has given me.
Improving my offhand shooting skills, first with my rimfires and then working up to the medium and big bore lever guns. My goal is to be able to quickly assume a firing stance and consistently hit a coffee can lid at fifty and then a hundred yards. Under time constraints. And go hog hunting.
To finally finish out my office/gun room including adequate closed storage. Now that I can climb stairs again.

Climbing is not the issue for me but going done truly is.
Going down, I have to hold on to the rail. The stairs in question are quite steep. Moving materials and equipment has always been an issue.
