Let’s see what we/i can do.
45-60 with 300grain bullet (i will use Lyman 457122) in a 26″ barrel and BP pressures ie under 16kpsi and aim for 1200fps
COL = 2.5″ and as close to 100% burn as i can.
Accurate #5 = 12grains for 1235fps and 14.4kpsi
Accurate #7 = 15grains for 1250fps and 12kpsi
Alliant POWER PISTOL = 11grains for 1205fps and 12.2kpsi
Alliant BLUE DOT = 15grains for 1270fps and 12.8kpsi
Hodgdon HS-6 = 13grains for 1240fps and 15.5kpsi
Winchester 540 = 12grains for 1190fps and 14.8kpsi
Henrick, where do you get this load data? Is this information available for other Winchester cartridges? The 76 is the only gun I don’t use smokeless when shooting. I have a 45-75 and a 50-95.

I have a program called “Quickload” that emulates any load in any cartridge. All i have to do is tell what bullet i want in what cartridge and what amount of powder.
It looks like this:
So if you want a load for a specific cartridge i can help you.
I have read about this program but don’t know anyone that has it. How about the 2 I mentioned in my post? The 45-75 using a 300 grain lead bullet and the 50-95 using a 300 grain grain lead bullet. I have never used smokeless powder in an 1876.
As with most things QL is a: Garbage in = garbage out program.
So if you can specify which bullets you intend to use i have a better chance at giving you exact loads.
The same goes for powder, unless you want loads for any suitable powder.
And barrel length;-)
Here goes:
45-75 with Lyman 457122 330 grain bullet and 26″ barrel, aiming for 1400fps and 100% burn.
Accurate #5 = 16grains for 1395fps and 17.1kpsi
Accurate #7 = 19grains for 1405fps and 13.8kpsi
Alliant BLUE DOT = 19grains for 1420fps and 14.4kpsi
Hodgdon HS-6 = 18grains for 1425fps and 19.7kpsi
Ramshot Enforcer = 23grains for 1440fps and 13kpsi
For the 50-95 the best i could was to use a Lee 515-450 i cut one band of, which puts it at 375grains.
It sits to deep in the case but it’s what i had on hand. Not to many .515″ bullets to choose from 😉
Again i strive for 1400fps and 100% burn
Accurate #5 = 19grains for 1420fps and 15kpsi
Accurate #7 = 23grains for 1415fps and 12.3kpsi
Alliant BLUE DOT = 23grains for 1435fps and 13kpsi
Hodgdon HS-6 = 20grains for 1395fps and 15.4kpsi
And so forth but without data for your actual bullet the calcs are a bit mute.
Only place i know of that will supply a proper 50cal bullet for the 1886 is Tom at accuratemolds.com!
Dammit why wont this bbs display the weblink properly?
Omit the asterix and copy paste!
And you can specify actual as cast diameter from the alloy you want to use, at no extra cost.
Tom is fast and he’s gooood!
I have 6 of his molds and they cast just as i specified when ordered.

The 45-75 has a 28″ barrel and uses a 300 grain bullet with a .459″ diameter. I don’t remember the mold that was used. I would like to stay around 1,350 ft./sec.
The 50-95 has a 26″ barrel and uses a 300 grain bullet with a .512″/.513″ diameter made using the Lyman 512137 mold. I would like to stay around 1,350 ft./sec.
I would like several different powders so I can see which may shoot the best in my guns.
Thanks for your help..
Gotcha!
50-95 26″ barrel with Lyman 512137 300grains bullet at 1350fps
Accurate #5 = 16.5grains for 1350fps and 8.5kpsi
Alliant HERCO = 15.5grains for 1365fps and 9.5kpsi
IMR TrailBoss = 18.5grains for 1355fps and 15.3kpsi
That big a case and that low speed is difficult!
The “game” is ballancing a full powder burn with keeping powder amount more than 25% of case capacity.
Wery small amounts of fast pistol powder combined with a large case capacity tend to react unexpectedly and weird “detonations” has been heard of!
45-75 28″ barrel with Lyman 457122 300grains bullet at 1350fps
Accurate #5 = 14grains for 1350fps and 12.7kpsi
Accurate #7 = 17grains for 1350fps and 10.4kpsi
Alliant HERCO = 13.5grains for 1355fps and 14.7kpsi
Alliant POWER PISTOL = 13.5grains for 1370fps and 12kpsi
Alliant BLUE DOT = 17grains for 1365fps and 10.9kpsi
Winchester 540 = 15grains for 1360fps and 14.4kpsi
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I will use toilet paper to keep the powder down at the primer. I use enough just to lightly fill the void above the powder and below the bullet. I have a chronograph so I can watch my FPS.
Chuck, I do the same on big case calibers and use corn meal on small. I shoot everything over a chronograph and tailor my loads to keep the fps variable to a minimum. It takes a little time but increases accuracy if you can keep it below 20 fps. The powders I use need to be kept up against the primer to achieve consistency. T/R
I use a 3 screen Oehler chronograph with a printer attached. I keep notes on each session. Sorry about the mess but I had to change the Excel file to a PDF in order to get it to upload and didn’t want to spend the time to reformat it. This was my 6th session with this cartridge so not all of the data was filled in. Just the results.
