A while back I restored a 4 digit ’73. Knowing the original load was 40 grains of black and a 200 grain pure lead bullet. I was told the original balloon style case accommodated that while the thicker newer cases won’t. Well…… last night I loaded 40 grains of 2f  Goex powder via a long brass drop tube, added a projo, seated and crimped and it fit the chamber perfectly without any effort. What gives? Was the original load the larger ctg powder? I shot with cross sticks today at 100 yards and got a 6″ group. Not bitching by any means but curious why they say you can’t load 40 grains… Any advice, comments appreciated.

40grs by volume or weight? Which case? Which bullet? Wad thickness? With BP volume is more important than weight; various cartridges and powders work best with varying amounts of compression. For example in my experience Swiss takes less compression (and in turn a smaller volume of powder) than KIK. The actual weight or volume means little; thicker wad, longer bullet, denser powder or smaller capacity case changes everything. The only thing that really matters is the volume of powder that works with YOUR combination of components and it sounds like you’re on the right track!

You’re right about the reduced capacity of solid-head cases, but your tube might well make the diff.  Friend of mine who shot BP competitively was able to load 80 g into a .45-70 case by means of a 4′ tube mounted on a vibratory table!

I’m using an original Winchester 44WCF 200 grain mold and Rem case. No wad as I want as much power as possible. Powder measured by weight as it’s virtually impossible to measure accurately by volume grain to grain. I have 38 pounds of Goex and around here Swiss is as hard to find as a coherent sentence from Biden.

My thoughts, too!
I think I have a lot of BP sometimes but a little dabbling with a 45-90 puts a big dent in my supply. I generally use KIK for my pistol cartridge loading but quite honestly I’m not sure I can replace it. Last time I bought Holy Black I couldn’t find Goex. Drop tubes do make a difference, I mainly use one because I think they give me better consistency.

Lol, yeh 2 area auctions here were huge scores. Hard to find any powder and then wham! Paid $11 apiece for 19 and $22 apiece for the rest. But I do a lot of BP shooting.

My time is also valuable. I’d rather be shooting black powder than be making black powder.
