OfflineBill,
In all of the many different cartridges I load with 4198, there is a very minimal difference in the grain weight for the two powders. I personally use them interchangeably. Simply start at or near the minimum load for H4198 and then work up from there.

OfflineBill-
For the few cartridges I load with 4198 I haven’t noticed a difference in performance between the IMR and Hodgdon versions. I’ll be trying it in additional cartridges in the future and will continue to treat them as two different powders. Do you know if Hodgdon has plans to discontinue either powder? At today’s powder prices it makes no sense to develop a load for a powder that may not be available in a year or two.

OfflineMy understanding is that the H4198 variant is still being manufactured by Hodgdon domestically, and that the IMR powder variants are manufactured in periodic batches at their Valleyfield, Ontario, Canada facility.
I will continue to use the IMR variant for as long as I can still find it. That stated, I did buy a few pounds of the H4198 for back-up (emergency) use. While I might need to tweak a few loads by a few tenths of a grain, my current IMR loads will be my starting point with the H4198.

OfflineI am definitely not the end all on powders, but have checked all the usual places for IMR 4198 or H-4198 with no success. Looking to help out a friend to whom I reluctantly sold some several years back. Lowered my supply and held him for a few years. Currently I only see a few IMR powders even available. I won’t comment on affordability tho! Those are seemingly only available in 1 lb cans, with no 8 pounders available for a couple of years. Seems I also can not back order which is a disturbing sign. My small stash of H-4198 is my strategic reserve. I’ve used it before with no known problems. It has now been a few years since new stocks of 4198 has been out, so maybe soon we will have new powder hitting the wholesalers? Tim

Tim,
I just bought (2) 1-lb bottles of H4198 from Natchez Shooters Supply. I ordered it last week and it was delivered yesterday.

Bert, Just like yesterday, only IMR 3031 in stock. Won’t even list IMR 4198 as “out of stock”. Had you had it on back order? Tim
Tim,
No I did not have it on back order. I simply ordered it online and they delivered it. I do have an account with them though.

OfflineHi Tim,
I checked the AmmoSeek website this morning. There are links to companies with both H4198 and IMR4198 advertised. Like all powders these days, they aren’t cheap, but they appear to have them in stock and ready to order.
I try to buy powder in person on the way to gun shows, no hazmat and shipping cost. Got 6 IMR 4198 from Scheels last year in Johnstown CO. Got 3lbs of H4198 from Scheels in Colorado Springs on the way to CGCA show last week. Also 1000 LR Primers. I got load data on 1886 cartridges from Hogdon, and good info from Mike Venturino. I load lead and light loads for safety as most of my 1886’s are not NS. Bill

Thanks, Mark! Tim
Yes indeed, Thanks!
I just ordered the 8-lb jug of IMR 4198… now to see how long it takes to get delivered. My only hope is that it will be enough (added to the 2.2 lbs I still have) to get me through the remainder of my reloading projects. In total, it will bring my inventory up to 12.2 lbs of 4198.

Apparently would have been a good day to invest in a Lottery ticket.

If all works out, I will have 10.2 lbs of IMR 4198 and 2 lbs of H4198 in my powder locker by the end of this month
I only get (289) 222 Rem Mag loads per pound, but I should be set for a few years now.

That’s what I like about the 22 Hornet, pretty stingy on the powder. 500 per pound, +/-. These days it’s certainly food for thought.

Mike,
Yes, and that is why I have strongly advocated that you join the HOA (Hornet Owners Association)! I actually get (560) rounds per pound for the 22 Hornet… 12.5 grains of Hodgdon Lil Gun per ctg. That said, neither of my K-Hornets are quite as stingy, and (500) rounds per pound is about all that I can get out of 1-lb.
I try to buy Lil Gun, Bullseye, and I4198 in as large of a quantity per container as possible.

OfflineIn case of fire, the local department may take the scenic route! I have probably too much on hands and my local department may make a few wrong turns getting here. Ft. Lewis, back when I was there, mandated no more than 1 lb of powder, but you could have all the gasoline you wished. Stupid but it was what it was. Tim
