Had a 63 Carbine that needed checking out and a 75 Sporter and 52C that tagged along…just because. The 63 was a bit balky with Winchester Wildcat and PMC Zapper but was about 80% with Aguila Super Extra. Trigger a bit sloppy and gritty. I figure the 63’s inner workings are either a bit dry or gunky. Maybe both. Either way I’ll address it at my earliest convenience. Did an ammo test on the 75 Sporter. It doesn’t care for Winchester Wildcat but was pretty happy with Norma Match, “R” word Eley Club and Eley Pistol Match. Got in some trigger time with the 52C and some Norma Match. Had a few fliers but I was just having some fun. Bolt and safety were having a bit of a disagreement but I’ll just put it on my “to be cleaned” list with the 63.
Beautiful February day for shooting. Now I need a rainy day for gun cleaning.

I picked up a 75 sporter a few weeks ago. The rifle came with a Weaver K4 post reticle scope. (ya, it’s drilled and tapped) I knew the rifle had potential after the first couple of shots with the Weaver. I had a Burris 3×9 laying around so I swapped the scopes and shot a .378 group at 50 yards using CCI standard velocity ammo. (sounds like a BB gun going off) This scope does not have parallax adjustment so I am relatively confident with a higher end piece of glass it will do better. Plenty good for knocking squirrels out of trees.
The last 63 I had loved Remington golden bullets, No problems with stovepipes. Accuracy was minute of tin can ;<)

The original Weaver Co. (who the hell owns it now?) would readjust parallax at no charge, & return the scope free also. I returned a K4 & K6 for that purpose, either of which I’d rather have on my rifle than any shiny aluminum scope. I’m also skeptical that any huge, ugly, modern scope is going to improve on that exceptional group.

I like this old scope but now I’m wondering what this 75 Sporter is capable of. I have a few good Leupold scopes lying around so I may put one on there someday. OTOH I hate those rings (2 screws on same side) so I will probably just play with it like it is. I may be able to get closer to half inch groups as it sits. I know that 52C will shoot better than I shot yesterday but that target is getting harder to see every year. Maybe I can get that loose nut behind the butt to settle down a little next trip out.
I probably took the wrong ammo for that 63, I’d forgotten Wildcat was closer to standard velocity than high. I believe my other 63 did like “R” word ammo, good thing it’s on store shelves because it’s not on mine. I did find a brick of Federal American Eagle marked $10.95, maybe it will like that. I really think a good cleaning will help the stovepipe issue, probably won’t hurt.

It was waaaaay in the back of my ammo shelf behind lots of 22 WMR ammo. I hope I still have a 22 Mag around here somewhere! You won’t believe the price on that Wildcat ammo. I have a newer brick of Wildcat and it has an advertised velocity similar to the Golden Bullet stuff. New American Eagle ammo also has a similar advertised velocity but it’s a totally different round these days. I seem to recall the old ammo earned that spot on the back of the shelf.

Report from the cleaning bench inconclusive. Both guns are cleaner than most .22’s in my little collection; quite clean, in fact. The 52C had some unburned powder and possibly other debris, I hope I got it flushed out. The little 63 Carbine was very clean but possibly a bit dry inside. Very little wear for a rifle nearly 90 years old. Butt stock is a bit loose, not sure how to tighten it up. Appears to be a spanner nut around the outer magazine tube under the butt plate.
I guess this means I need to go shoot them again!

Oops, nice day at the range but forgot to report on my fussy little ones. 63 Carbine shot well once it was lubed properly, still doesn’t like Wildcat but suspect the failures to extract were due to erratic velocity. Shot quite well with “R” word golden bullets and fairly well with the American Eagle. 52C firing pin still failing to stay cocked when closing the bolt occasionally. I’m thinking it needs a bit more sear engagement but I’ll study on it a bit more.

In the past I had some of the same Wildcat .22 ammo you were using.Not very good stuff in my opinion.Not all that accurate and a fair number of misfires.Never bought any more.For the most part, I stick with the copper plated, solid, 40 grain Super-X 1255 FPS stuff .Never seem to have trouble with it.:)
Recently put a Redfield scope on my .22 Winchester Model 190.At some point, I have to get it to the range to get it sighted in.

Wildcat used to be decent ammo, even had a Ruger MKI Target that apparently thought it was target ammo. It was only a little faster than standard velocity at that time and quality control was evidently a bit better. Thanks for the tip on the Super-X, hopefully it’s cheaper than the R-word stuff this 63 likes. This one doesn’t seem quite as accurate as my previous 63 Carbine but I think it will be accurate enough to be a fun little plinker.

I must admit I have not had very good luck with any of the Winchester .22 ammunition ,other than the Super-X,40 grain,copper plated,1255 FPS ,solid ammunition.Seems I get a lot of misfires using the other versions.Perhaps they are not made with the quality control of the Super-X .This has been my experience ,others may have had different.:)
