Yeah, some kind of record…..especially since the box was made in 1954 and the end label is an earlier style.

Jeff,

Do you have guesstimate for the vintage of the end label?

Anyone want to take a stab as to the entire serial number on the label? It looks like the first four are 8488 to me. Is it 5 digits or six? BertH’s findings place the 848XXXs in the 1934 to 1938 range.

Could it be 848804?

Just a stab with major zoom.

It doesn’t shook me at all , as there have been many boxes sold as of late.

The people that want the idea of having a rifle with a box -sky is the limit I believe.

All the collectables seem to be this way, I see Smith and Colt boxes with the same ridiculous sums being spent….

I’ve bought a few 90’s chambered LR in very nice shape for less than the price of the box, go figure. Too many people with too much money obviously……..

EW

If the end label is real (which I doubt), the markings are at least pre-1942 and technically should be pre-1938.  The 1954 box is an actual Winchester rifle box, albeit with a different end label glued on.

So, how did a pre-war “end label” end up on a 1954 box?  Winchester would NOT do that since they had already gone through 2 corporate name changes and would not send out something with an erroneous corporate name on it.  They were VERY good at updating paperwork, including end labels, each time the name changed.

Again, the label and box do not match by many years and appear to be someone’s fanciful creation.  With a little additional research I can tell you what was originally shipped in the box from Winchester by the box code but it would take awhile.

The box fakers don’t understand all of the packaging nuances yet so I am hesitant to post details on a public forum where they can learn from their mistakes.  I would hate to make it easier for them to ruin our hobby.

Someone should ask Jesse when 848804 was shipped from the warehouse (if the information is available).  That might be an interesting tidbit to add to the equation.

Jeff,

The only information available is the PR date, June 1936.
