Good morning! This is my first time posting, but myself and my father have two Model 62As and a Model 61. My dad is a Model 12 nut. The reason I am posting is because I was hoping someone could point me in the direction of a good gunsmith to help with the Model 61. Here is the issue. I was out plinking yesterday, and as I pulled back the slide to eject a fired cartridge case the bolt got stuck about halfway back. The empty cartridge case was extracted from the chamber, but did not eject and I could not fully pull back the slide. I tried to with just enough force to know that was not going to work. Very odd, as this firearm has functioned just fine in the 15 or so years we have owned it. Serial number is 269,9XX. Original condition gun.

After I got the gun apart (removed the lower, buttstock assembly) the bolt slid freely front to back in the upper receiver assembly. Assemble the lower back together with the upper and the bolt, again, will retract about halfway and gets stuck.

I removed the bolt and I think a piece or pieces are broken/damaged. Also, a spring and small pin came out of the bolt.

See photo links below:

Photo 1 https://ibb.co/P42WSM1 –> notice the two yellow arrows pointing to the spring and the small pin. These came out of the area where the arrows start

Photo 2 https://ibb.co/9cGgmxy –> notice the piece circled in yellow (is this the carrier plunger?) and how it is slanted to the diagonal. This moves around freely.

Photo 3 https://ibb.co/kg35Ygn –> same piece circled in yellow as in Photo 2 but photo taken from a different vantage point.

Photo 4 https://ibb.co/DzpHfzQ –> opposite side of bolt as in Photo 1

Photo 5 https://ibb.co/hsDfx1t –> lower receiver left hand side

Photo 6 https://ibb.co/r6RZDmx –> lower receiver right hand side

I do not know what the issue is, however, I suspect photos 1, 2 and 3 show the issue(s). I am not sure though, as I am not comfortable in taking this bolt down. I included photos 5 and 6 just in case those could be helpful.

Can anyone recommend a gunsmith that can trouble shoot this, and get this bolt back up and running?

Thanks very much in advance for any help you can give. I am in Florida.

Good morning,

I collect Model 61’s but I am far from a gunsmith myself.  I agree with you that images 1, 2, & 3 look suspicious to me.  Here are a couple of manuals that should be helpful to you.  http://homesteadparts.com/shop/a-disassembly-manual-for-the-winchester-61-pump-22-rifle-p-9.html?cPath=1_21

I will send a .pdf to your email address.  You might also want to post over on the RFC forum.  Lots of VERY knowledgeable guys over there.  https://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=52

Michael:

Thanks very much for this. I have studied the situation and I believe I have found the problem. I had a friend help me get the broken carrier plunger out, which required removing a very small pin that I have serious doubts about my ability to get back in! We will see. I need to order some replacement parts from Numrich.

I also asked over on rimfire central. Again, thank you very much for your response!
