I saw a Winchester Model 55 in 22 s,l,lr for sale locally, but I do not know much about this rifle.  It is in 80% condition for blueing, 95% condition on the stock and the bore is bright and clean.  The dealer wants $95.00 for it.  What can anyoone here tell me about this rifle?

According to the Blue Book, they were made from 1958-61. $95 sounds like an o.k. deal. Where else are you going to buy a .22 for that money, and it’s a Winchester.

Shoot low boys. They're riding Shetland Ponies.

If your evaluation of the condition of this Winchester 55 it is worth between $171 to $231 and usually goes for slightly more at a hot auction.

I have one which is in excellent condition,  until I fired it. The cartridge ruptured at the rim and blew the plastic load ramp into pieces.  The expensive replacement part is aluminium and pricey. If I were to do it all over again, I would replace the ramp and put the original in a bag so not to endanger it.

I know of quite a few 55’s that have had this happen. I think it is caused by using a high velocity load, instead of a standard velocity, which causes the bolt to rebound ever so slightly leaving the cartridge unsupported. The 55 is an open bolt action and there is no means of locking the  bolt but for the spring which launches the bolt towards the cartridge. A weak bolt spring may be the cause or at least contribute to the problem. In any event only use standard velocity in this fun single shot automatic action Winchester. Winchester-55.jpg
