Dear Members, I´m for Argentina, and have been collecting all my life, I´m 74 yrs old…Winchester line never appealed much to me, though I have a few,but definitely I´m not a specialist in this make.
The case in point is that days ago my gunsmith offered me a Winchester mod 90,22 short only, octagon barrel, serial number 726xxx with a stainless steel barrel, must confess that I had no idea that stainless was already in use 90 yrs ago.
My intention is to negotiate the purchase but must confess that I dont know which price to offer( nor does my gunsmith), simply because cant say if its a rare piece or not.
For the abovementioned reasons I ask you to post some info, about this piece, a ball park price and any other consideration you can add to enlighten me
in this matter.
Many thanks for your attention,sincerely,
Raúl
Hello Raúl,
Beginning in the year 1926, Winchester began offering several different models with a “STAINLESS STEEL” barrel as a special order item (at a substantial price increase). Due to to extra cost, it is was not a popular special order item, and by 1930, Winchester was installing them at no extra cost to use up the inventory they still had on hand.
The partial serial number you mention indicates that the rifle in question was manufactured in September of 1926. For research purposes, I would very much appreciate it if you could provide the complete serial number.
Is it possible for you to provide clear detailed pictures of the rifle so that I can assess the graded condition? It is very common to find the Stainless Steel barrels devoid of the original black finish that was applied to them by Winchester.
