Some time ago a purchase an 1890 WRF 3rd generation with no serial number on the tang,  It has a serial number on the receiver in the typical location of a 3rd generation gun.  It is roll died deeply and appears factory, R316.  Below the R316 is the letter A.  Has anyone seen a serial number on an 1890 similar to this or have any ideas if it is indeed a factory number?

Thank you

The number you mention is not a factory original serial number marking. I highly suspect that somebody had the rifle refinished and a new number was applied at that time.
