Schwings’ book is pricey…so here’s the gist.
First model barrels and most 2nd model barrels have no patent dates (the pat.dates are on the tangs).
Late second model barrels will have pat. dates June 26.88.(Browning Bros. original patent) and Dec 6.92. (Winchesters’ 92 pat.date is for the takedown).
Early 3rd models add the date Nov. 27.06 (for the 3rd model receiver with exposed motise cuts).
Later 3rd model barrels add the date May 30.1911 for the re-inforced magazine tube collar.

Wow is very pricey thanks Rustjack and Bert
The book is cheap compared to the cost of making a mistake when purchasing a rifle. If you are going to spend $2000 on a rifle what is the problem of $200 on a book that will help you make an informed purchase and not make a $1000 mistake?

OfflineI see the gunon the cover of Ned’s book is coming up for auction at R.I.A.. I sure would like to include it in My expanding collection of 1890’s, but it’ll probably go way over My head. Oh ya’ , a couple of hundred bucks for a book with such detailed information on any subject is probably the best money one could spend when considering putting out serious money for an item.

Roger-
Considering what I paid for this book several years ago and what I’ve learned from reading it I’d say it was one of my better investments. Like many collectors I have a few dozen books in my reference library and they are among my most prized possessions. Even in this “Information Age” I don’t think we’ll ever replace a good book.

Henry, that’s interesting. Is this from the Paul Vanderlinden or Kidd collection?

Was just perusing the catalog and the name of the collection was not mentioned. It is Lot 22, photos are worth a look. If you’d like I’ll make inquiries.
