I posted an ad for a buttstock for a 06 beater I bought. The serial number falls outside (way outside) the range on Oldguns and the Winchester site. It is 784315. It is a beater so why would anyone modify the serial number. It is on both the receiver and bottom (?)tang. Just curious.
Jim,
Neither of the websites you mention (Oldguns, or the so called “Winchester”) has accurate DOM/serialization data for most of the Winchester models. Serial number 784315 was manufactured in August of 1928.
Beginning on March 10th, 1926, at serial number 713200, Winchester merged the Model 1890(90) serial number sequence with the Model 1906(06). At that same time, the stamped “A” marking under the serial number on the Model 90 was discontinued, as was the “B” marking under the serial numbers on the Model 06. When the merge occurred, the serial number sequence for the Model 06 had reached 685999. There are no Model 06 rifles in the in the 686000 – 713199 serial number range. The highest confirmed Model 06 serial number is 854519.
