looking at a Winchester 03 in 22 wrf to buy but it makes no mentioned of stainless barrel in the book. it has some greenish brown primmer under the worn spots on the barrel. with the words -stainless steel- on the barrel. is this a special order?
Winchester did not manufacture any Model 03 (1903) rifles in 22 WRF. The lone cartridge chambering was the 22 Win Auto.
In the year 1926, Winchester offered (special order) Stainless Steel barrels for all models in production at that time. The finish Winchester used on the stainless steel barrels was black lacquer (jappaned finish).
What is the serial number on the rifle you are looking at?

That IDs it as a 1928 production Model 03, and in the correct date range for a factory installed Stainless Steel barrel. Can you post pictures of the barrel?
