Hello, JWA. Have a Win. 62 pre-war SN for your research. 36745. Hope that helps?
Thanks Richard,
I believe it is E.W. Hall and Bert H. that are conducting the 62 survey but I am sure they saw your post and noted the information. Thanks for participating.

E.W. has been watching the 5-spot 62’s lately also but there is no official survey.

#853497 .22 short (5 spot)
We found this rifle in the recent Hessney auction. Does it have a flat spring action (Model 90 type), or a coil spring action (Model 62A type)? Most of the other serial numbers found in this range have a “B” suffix… does this serial number have the “B” ?

Bert
Model 90 Flat Spring Configuration – 2 screws, 2 pins
2 screws on upper tang – No stampings
Checkered Hammer
Crowned muzzle
3-pin breech bolt
Model 62 barrel markings (62-1)
No “B” suffix on Serial Number
Composition Butt Plate
Small 10 groove slide handle.
NOTE: I have 2 of these 62/90’s. (#851031 & #853497) Of note, both of them have dark receivers, with Model 62-1 barrels that appear older than the receivers. Both chambered for .22 SHORT. They are identical in every way except one has a triangular loading port, the other does not. Lastly, #853497 is a “5-SPOT” gun accompanied by the documents posted earlier in RimFire Central.

Hope this sheds some sort of light on what Winchester was doing during this time frame!!!
I have a 62 s/n 854002, I sent pic’s to Dan Brumley and this is what he had to say. If I’m reading correctly in this forum you are suggesting that 62’s were built in the 800,000 range? Please advise Thanks Greg
Hi Greg;
Thanks for the pictures, they were very helpful. Your rifle started its life as a Winchester Model 1906. The Model 1906 and the model 62 were both basically a continuation of the Model 1890, but with modifications. Of the Model 1890, the Model 1906, and the Model 62, only the Model 1906 reached serial numbers in the mid-800,000’s range and used a “B” suffix. So your rifle is a Model 1906 with a Model 62 barrel and slide handle.
Your serial number indicates that your rifle was probably made during the parts clean-up (1932 – 1937). There were approximately 848,000 + of the Model 1906 rifles made and we know that large groups of serial numbers were skipped during production. What we don’t know is what the last serial number actually was. Since the records, on the Model 1906, are incomplete I can only guess that your rifle was made during the last year of the parts clean-up (1937).
Your rifle was probably re-barreled outside of the factory long after it was originally shipped. The Model 62 barrel, on your rifle, was made between 1947 and 1959. It may have been a factory replacement barrel, which I doubt since there is no mail-order proofmark, or was a part from another rifle (more likely). Since it appears that the barrel, slide handle, and possibly the butt stock are from a Model 62/62A, it would seem that a 62/62A was parted out to rebuild the Model 1906. It also appears, to me, that the metal may have been refinished.
I hope that this information helps. If you have questions, please let me know.
Kind Regards;

Hi Greg,
Yes; we have have documented several dozen Model 62/62A rifles that were assembled using receivers numbered above 846000. SN 854002 was serialized in June of 1942.
See these two threads for more information about the Model 06/62/62As with serial numbers from the 1890 sequencing:
WACA Thread: Model 90/06/62/62A Survey
RFC Thread: 1890 Winchesters Serial Numbers
Is yours chambered for 22 Short or Short/Long/Long Rifle?
Does it have Model 62 barrel markings or 62A?
Is there a “B” suffix on Serial Number?
Does it have a Model 90 Flat Spring action (2 screws, 2 pins) or Model 62A Coil spring action?
Is the Hammer Checkered or Serrated?
Does it have the small 10 groove slide handle or the larger one?
Thanks,
E.W.
To add further to information E.W. provided, Dan Brumley’s response to you is not accurate. Your rifle was intentionally manufactured as a Model 62, using left over Model 90/06 parts. Please consider providing the answers to the questions E.W. posed, as it will aid in fully identifying your rifle.

Is yours chambered for 22 Short or Short/Long/Long Rifle? (22 S.L. OR LR)
Does it have Model 62 barrel markings or 62A? (62A)
Is there a “B” suffix on Serial Number? (B on Receiver, no letter on Lower Tang)
Does it have a Model 90 Flat Spring action (2 screws, 2 pins) or Model 62A Coil spring action? (not sure and reluctant to take apart as no screw has been touched on this gun)
Is the Hammer Checkered or Serrated? (Serrated)
Does it have the small 10 groove slide handle or the larger one? ( Larger one)

Greg, you don’t have to take the stock off the rifle to be able to tell.
Hold the rifle upside down, If the lower tang has 2 screws in it forward of where the stock screw comes through, it will be a flat spring.
If all that is visible is the threaded portion of the stock screw on the lower tang and the rest of the tang has no other screws it will be a coil main spring.
