I came across this M52 while browsing auctions today when I should be working. It has an unusual buttplate (at least to me). Anyone know anything about this? I don’t imagine its a Winchester thing, as I’ve never seen it before, but maybe so? Anythoughts?

Here is the listing:

And a pic if you don’t want to go to the listing:

With a built-up (plastic wood?) PG to compensate for what was lacking in the original stock. One of Unertl’s earliest products was an aluminum PG extension, so whoever did this was not alone in wanting to improve the PG.  Looks like a bull-brl. gun, so maybe it would be worth restocking.  (IF it sold cheaply enough.)

The rifle is an unmarked heavy barrel “A” model, which means it was made to “A” model revision, but was not stamped with the “A” suffix as were later “A” revision rifles. The Bull guns had not been introduced yet, so this was the heaviest barrel available on the 52. This particular rifle was serial numbered in November, 1935.

The buttplate is an M.H. Canjar adjustable unit. It is unique in that the center part of buttplate pivots down to form a hook for offhand shooting. If you look close you can see the hinge pin on for hook on toe of buttplate. It is not factory, and has a sizable effect on value. Chances are the stock was shortened when buttplate installed. Good original replacements are very difficult to find, and can easily bring $250 – $350 which is near half what the rifle is worth in original condition.
