Certainly not what seller claims, a prototype. Guessing seller is Collector’s Firearms, well known for incorrect or misleading descriptions & HIGH prices.
No, it is not a prototype. It was a test rifle used at the factory for checking chamber pressures. I don’t know the exact history, but you can see a plugged port in the top along with the sleeve added around chamber. I’m sure this was probably used with a copper or lead crusher to determine chamber pressures for rimfires back in the 20’s – 30’s. Neat rifle for a collector but absurdly high price.

I’m leaving it for Big Larry.
Big Larry isn’t even remotely interested. My collecting M52’s is a thing of the past. Lost interest in M1906’s too. Don’t know which direction I will go now. Thinking about saving up for a RM or M1911A1 1937 NM. Big Larry

Interesting rifle but they need to move that decimal point to the left one place. I was expecting to see an ID tag but I may be confused again.

Collector Firearms down in Houston is best avoided by all who have not seen the elephant and heard the owl, which includes me. I wanted a deluxe 71 for years and CF advertised one said to be a long tang version in mint condition and I drove the 250 miles to get it after putting down a deposit. It was a ’49 short tang wearing a Williams 5D that I suspect had been substituted for a 56W. I negotiated a too-small discount and took it back north but the over-hyped description left a sour taste I should have known better and it taught me not to buy what I didn’t know.

Typical story. The 56 is what it would have had if ordered with a rcvr. sight, so probably had only the open rear sight when new. But most of Collector’s customers neither know nor care about “details” such as this. About US military rifles, they know next to nothing, despite selling thousands of them.

That’s disappointing. I’ve heard good things about them and they certainly have some interesting inventory.

Makes me think you’ve been hearing from some of those who don’t sweat the “details.” But located in a city full of millionaires, they don’t need to worry about those who do.

Clarence, I grew up in the Houston metro area. Pasadena was and still is the Texas version of Bayonne, NJ or Gary, IN. No millionaires, just a lot of hydrogen sulfide. As one of our city council persons said, in response to complaints about air and water pollution, “Honey, cyanide is just a scare word.” I believe fools are evenly distributed among the American population. Except for California.
