A friend has received his grandfather’s Winchester 69 that is drilled and tapped for the Weaver scope mount, but the mount and screws are missing. I’ve been able to find the proper T1 Weaver mount on eBay, but I need the screws. I’ve been searching the internet off and on for half a day, bit have not been able to find any. Can anyone maybe recommend a vendor or other source that might have these?
Near as I can tell, it is a 10-32 with a tapered shoulder.
Most of the Weaver T1 bases used a 6-48 screw like these modern reproductions – https://www.amazon.com/Black-Oxide-Drive-Weaver-Screws/
Do a search on Amazon for “Weaver Base Screws” and you will find an assortment. You want the correct screw length for your receiver though which is probably fairly short such as the 1/4″ length.

I appreciate the response.
I have a screw sizing plate, and this screw does not fit in the “8” hole, but does fit in the “10” hole, so looks like it is bigger than a “6”. I also have a thread pitch gauge, and the “32” fits into the threads nicely. It is short though, at around 1/4″ if you count the tapered shoulder.
I happen to have a Winchester 72 that my father gave me when I was 14 that has the same mount and screws needed, and that is where I got the screw that I pictured. My screw fits into the holes drilled into his receiver, so I just need to find a pair like mine.
Hi John,
If those are the original screws are you sure you need the Weaver T1 base? All of the ones in my box have a smaller hole size, a 10-32 screw won’t fit through. Possibly someone enlarged the holes on a T1 base to use the quick detachable screws?
Otherwise, I don’t know of a source for those vintage 10/32 thumbscrews, sorry.

Definitely a T1. The rifle in question is a Winchester Model 69, and the rifle I pulled the sample screw from is my Winchester Model 72. See the attached pic of my 72:
If you will search the Web for “thumbscrew providers” you can quickly assemble a list of national hardware suppliers. Measure and photograph the thumbscrew, so you can email their customer service departments images. Then call the customer service number and ask for a way to email or text the images. Given that the thread and pitch is common, I’d be amazed if you couldn’t find a good substitute. Don’t obsess about shaft length; get a longer one and cut it down, if you need to.
if you can’t get a tapered shank, install a nut and file to shape, then Loctite or epoxy to the screw. But I’m betting you can find one that will work without altering.
Try [email protected]. I needed some stainless thumbscrews and button release nuts, to modify the quill of my Jet drill press to a quick change system. There are lots of others who will happily sell in onesies and twosies as long as you’re willing to pay a premium for what you need. Example: I needed a thumbscrew and paid ten bucks plus shipping for it. Big deal. If you need it for a one-shot deal

Many ACE hardware stores have, “Gun Screws”, and listed in their stack of plastic bis listed as such. They don’t carry all of them, but a few, that come in handy, and are black, or a deep dark blue. MsMaster Carr has what is usually needed also.

My local ACE has a gun screw section, but they are limited to the usual size 6 and 8 screws of various descriptions and no knurled ones such as the one I pictured. They did have some black 10-32 x 1/4″ hex drive tapered flat head screws (pictured above) in the regular section that will work.
I was hoping to find a pair of the originals, but will settle for the ones that will work. 🙂
Good old Ace! Those look good enough for me. It looks like those are star drive heads and the seem neat and unobtrusive. At that price, you could buy some extras and try knurling the edges with a checkering file, then applying Oxpho blue solution.

Nice! Looks vintage now. Thanks for the update.

Just to finish up…. my friend brought over a scope, and this small little project is finished. He had originally bought a vintage Weaver Marksman from the auction site, but his wife dropped it and subsequently there were bits rattling around inside. So – he bought a replacement, this time a new Tasco, which I mounted for him. He left the Weaver with me, and it turns out it was easy to disassemble, fix, and reassemble.
All I have to do now is take it to the range and get it zeroed.
