This was my basket case, cracked receiver, first model 1890 22 long. The crack ran from the top of the receiver to the slide cover opening. The receiver was also bent. Tig welded and straightened I don’t think anyone could ever tell, save the tiny dimple right on the edge of the slide port. From a wall hanger to an old gal ready to go dancing……… The Butt stock isn’t quite finished.

Nicely done. I’m puzzled that the TIG welds don’t show up in the colors but maybe that reflects the quality of the work. I thought about this rifle and another 1890 in 22l I’ve been fondling when I saw some 22l ammo on the shelf awhile back.

Thanks Mike, The receiver was annealed prior to any work being done. It was welded with a very mild rod which makes it much easier for machining/polishing. At the beginning of the CCH process everything was “soft” due to the annealing. You can’t do any metal work so to speak on something that has been CCH without annealing it.
I did not get my parts back from the Nickel model to work on this weekend. Next week hopefully………… Friggin Blizzard here today, It should be 50 with frogs croaking, It’s 25* and migrating birds are freezing!
Best,

Tell me about it! The beautiful little wood frogs usually starting breeding in my pond the last wk of March–which I always look forward to with great joy; it’s still frozen solid! Global warming? Where the hell is it?
Anyway, I’m always glad to hear that someone has invested time & money in resurrecting a gun that some might feel is a lost cause…because they sure ain’t making any more of them!

It was not a very big investment, $600 and change if I recall and a few bucks for the welding. I think it was better than investing in the market at the end of January. The rest is just hobby for something to do during our long winters.
Would love to see a before picture?

If you click three times on the second pic, you will get the magnifier to use. Look from the top of the receiver to the slide port, the crack is quite visible. I got rid of the aftermarket wood that it came with and replaced it with Winchester factory wood.
