Bert,

Just wondering when your article/research on the 1890-1906 parts cleanup rifles will be available. I’ve got lots of questions that I hope will be answered from your research. TIA for the effort put forth in the collection of the data and the willingness to share it.

Best,

Erin

Erin,

I have a partner in crime that is the primary person compiling the research data, and I am planning to assist him in putting together the article, but currently do not have a time table for when it will be compiled and ready to publish. Currently, we have (76) rifles identifies (surveyed) that are in the true “parts clean-up” serial number range, and nearly (600) that are in the Post-March 10th, 1926 to June 6th, 1932 range (the combined Model 90 and 06 production range). I can & will entertain any questions you may have at this time.

Hi Bert,

My largest curiosity lies in the octagon to round barrel switch.  I’m guessing with only 76 rifles in this category info is probably inconclusive unless the round barrels are found before the actual cleanup rifles. I’m also curious as to the actual number of clean up guns or what the spread in your data sheet indicates between the lowest and highest number. I realize the serial numbers are not consecutive so possibly an actual accurate number is unobtainable.

Thanks for sharing the data you have.

Hello Erin,

Unfortunately, the survey did not track the number of Model 90 clean-up rifles with 23-inch round versus 24-inch octagon barrels.  What I can tell you, is that of the (76) parts clean-up rifles documented this far, they breakdown as follows;

1. Model 90 = 27  (35.56%)

2. Model 06 = 12 (15.79%)

3. Model 62 = 20 (26.32%)

4. Model 62A = 17 (22.37%)

All of the parts clean-up rifles documented thus far are in the 846207 – 854519 serial range.  The model designation was derived from what was marked on the barrel.  Based on memory alone, of the (27) Model 90 rifles in the survey, well less than half of them had a round barrel installed on them.

The actual serial number range for the parts clean-up rifles is from 846023 – 854747, for a total of 8,725 rifles.  If we use the current (76) specimens in the survey and then extrapolate it forward, the production numbers would look something like this;

1. Model 90 = 3,100

2. Model 06 = 1,378

3. Model 62 = 2,290

4. Model 62A = 1,952

With a total od 3,100 Model 90s in the parts clean-up run, it is reasonably possible that one-third (33.3%) of them could have a round barrel, amounting to approximately 1,000.
