I saw a Model 61 for sale, SN 184911, but in comparing the barrel markings to “The Winchester Handbook” by Madis, the barrel markings are not correct for this SN. On the left side of the barrel it has the markings noted for serial numbers past 239000 by Madis. The right side of the barrel is supposed to have “MADE IN NEW HAVEN CONN. … etc, but this rifle has no markings on the right side of the barrel.
So, I suspect this is a replacement barrel, but they forgot to add the right side markings, and they did not look up what the left side barrel was supposed to be for that S/N.
Is Madis typically correct? Aren’t all Model 61 supposed to have markings on the right side of the barrel?

Sparky;
The barrel marking is correct for this S/N. Markings on the right side was dropped on the round barrel in the 1940s. The markings on the left side of S/N 184911 started in 1951. This rifle was made 4/1952 according to Ned Schwing’s book – Winchester Slide-Action Rifles – Volume II. I have not looked at the Madis book so not sure where you information came from. RR
