Model 61s:  SN 118219 and 272998, former is flawless like it was NIB; latter has a few light scratches on receiver, wood has heavy lacquer sheen to it, but undamaged.

Model 62As: SN 61535 and 133997, former has light patina corrosion, some scratches on wood; latter has no visible corrosion, but wood is badly scratched up

Never owned a Winchester rimfire before.

Which do you prefer?  Model 61 or 62A?

How much do these typically sell for?

That’s kind of like the Blonde or Brunette question……

If it were me, I’d take one of each.  ;<)

Just kidding,

They both have their attributes, The 61 is a bit more stream lined and it’s a little smoother cycling. Generally sell for a couple hundred more than a 62A in comparable condition.  If you like the external hammer, then the 62A might fit the bill a little better. Both models shoot very well in the accuracy department.

My .02 worth, I’m sure others will chime in.

Before bidding, you’d do well to research SOLD prices on Gun Broker.  Remember also that GB prices are never bargains–they represent the upper end of the price range.

I have owned several of each model. Grew up with a 62A that I started shooting at 5 years old. Still have it. Used to go through a 500 round carton in a day on a regular basis. I like that hammer.

Shoot low boys. They're riding Shetland Ponies.

I’m finding a lot more auction results for 62As than 61s.  62A prices range from $300 to $500 with the average around $425.  61 is about the same except magnums were $1400 and $1600.

That average price surprises me!  I’d have guessed $700 or more.  Have to retract my comment that you could buy 2 M.12’s for the price of a 61.

I think the first 61 mentioned if it were gotten for much less than $1100 would be surprising.  When I saw the “average”  prices you mentioned I thought this was one of those old archived threads that sometime gets resurrected.  Clarence’s guess would be much closer to the reality of what these rifles go for.

Just my humble opinion and a quick search of Gunbroker completed auctions.

Just a quick glance at gunbroker completed sales revealed shooter grade 61’s (standard configuration) are bringing $500-600. Nice clean ones are in the $800-900 range. Prices go ballistic for single caliber designations with octagon barrels, $2,000 and up.

Winchester Model 61’s bring high prices now, I first noticed them trading higher about five years ago and values seem to be holding up good.

Top condition 22LR’s bring around $1000 and Magnums are more scarce and seem to be fetching about $1400 and more.

The Model 61 is a natural pointer, cycles easily and is very accurate.

It is no coincidence that the overall design profile and silhouette resemble the Model 12 and Model 42 shotguns.

For me, the Model 61 is the best repeating 22LR ever made.

I have no experience with the 62A.

Erin

That makes sense.  All of the sale prices I found were from live, local, bid-from-the-floor auctions over the last year.   Those sales tend to run a little lower than internet auctions.  It depends on who shows up to bid.  Sometimes I get lucky and grab a nice gun at a low price (actually I got all my guns that way except for one when I got carried away in a bidding war).  I excluded NIB and octagon barrels since those prices were way higher than I would ever bid for.

No, you are correct Clarence.  I checked on Remington model 12s also and they were running from $225 to $310 in live “bid-from-the-floor” auctions with the average at about $260.  They are all (model 61s, 62s and 12s) around NRA “OD” “Very Good” quality rifles, so they all show some wear.

Good to know.  I’m hoping I could get the first 61 at less than $1100.  The second one is not bad either.  You never know what might happen at these auctions.  If two devout 61 collectors get into a bidding war, then they could send the price sky high.  On the other hand, if they stay home that day, I could walk away with a bargain.

Sparky,

I know the auction you are referring to and took a look at the gun photos.  FWIW I would go with Model 61 serial # 272998 as it has the grooved receiver for easy scope mounting.  I’m of an age where I need either a receiver sight or scope to see the broad side of a barn so I can point at it.

A couple of relevant data points for you to consider:

I purchased a model 61, without grooved receiver, at another PA auction for $725 in April 2018.  It is in very nice condition and I was mentally prepared to go significantly higher (caution, I have been known to overpay).

I purchased a model 62A, at the same auction house you are looking, for $625 in Dec 2018.  It too is in very nice condition and again I would have gone higher.

As stated in this thread, the model 61’s in 22 mag go for considerably more.  I passed on several at the auction house you are looking as they were beyond what I wanted to pay.  I ended up purchasing a very nice condition 22 mag at another PA auction house last June for $1650 and felt very good about the price for the condition.  Every other 61 in 22 mag that I have seen at on-site auctions over the last couple of years were north of $1800.

Haven’t decided if I will attend the auction you are interested in but if I do I won’t be bidding against you.  Say hello if you recognize me from my WACA forum photo. Good luck to you.  I’m now keeping an eye open for a nice 69A as discussed in another topic on this forum.

Mac,

That is the auction house I like the least.  I’ve never won a bid there and I’ve seen issues with authenticity and listing accuracy.  For example, checkout lot 280 listed as an 1890 in 22LR, but the S/N is 294601 which precedes when 22LR became available.  They also don’t post sale prices after the auction.  Maybe I’m just cheap, but I have much better success in Lancaster County.  Too bad because it is the closest to where I live.  I’m not holding much hope of getting any of these rifles and if any show up at an auction house in Lancaster County, then I’ll probably skip it.  I’ll let you know.

If anyone has a source for honest, original Remington 12s for less than $450 a copy I’ll buy them sight unseen by the truckload…one of the greatest pump .22s ever introduced to mankind.  And I challenge anyone to show me a DECENT Remington 121 for less than that.  I have cash on hand.

Absolutely!  But what else would you expect from John Pedersen, Remington’s answer to John Browning?  (The two were friends & collaborators, not antagonists.)  Every detail of it’s construction, like the hole in the extractor that allows you to tell at a glance if it’s “loaded,” shows the intelligence of its design.

Less than helpful but here’s my take; a comprehensive collection of Winchester 22’s would ideally contain at least two of each. One each in high condition and one to shoot. I’m not doing very well in that regard as both of my 61’s are a little too nice to shoot and I haven’t found a high condition 62(A) yet. My 62A is actually a pretty nice 80% or better gun so I haven’t spent a lot of time looking for a better one. No help on the price, either. I paid too much for one 61 and stole the other as well as the 62A.

Wait for the right gun, it doesn’t have to be either/or at this time.

I like the 62A over the 61, although they are both great rifles.  I would think that to purchase either model that is in excellent condition for less than a grand would be a stroke of good luck, but I have not priced them in a long time, so what do I know?! SurprisedWink.  The one pictured below is from Oklahoma that has had less than a box of shells fired through it, according to the son of its first owner.  There are no marks on the wood and the bluing is superb, although it does have cycling marks on the slide and top rails:

Sparky,

Actually I’ve been pretty pleased with that auction house near you.  I do stay away from the guns in 2nd group as they are markedly less condition than the 1st/main group.  Regarding the Lancaster auction house, is that the one with the ice cream shop close by?  If so I’ve had recent good experience there but it’s a longer drive for me.

Here is a pic of my Winchester .22 lineup:  Model 61 .22 Win Mag RF, Model 61 .22 S, L or LR, Model 62A (pre-war), and Model 63.  I’d like to add a Model 1890 .22 WRF.

Very nice. You have a good start on an attractive assortment of Winchester 22’s.

Do you have a theme or a plan for adding to those?
