As I go deeper and deeper into the realm of bankruptcy, I find myself with another 22 rifle. Winchester of course. The devil made me do it. I have to stay off my computer. Anyway, it arrived via UPS this AM. A 99% late M74 with the grooved receiver. # 402328 A no XXX’s. According to sources, it was made in 1955 near end of production. However, it has a -52- dated bbl. Parts clean up I suppose. Took it apart and Ren Waxed it. I probably will not shoot it. Have another from 1947 to shoot.     Big Larry

That is not another step on the way to bankruptcy BL, just another wise investment on the way to happiness!

Congrats! Looks like a fine addition to your collection. Thanks for introducing me to the 74, it’s a nice little rifle that I hadn’t given much thought before your earlier thread.

I also have an 03 and a M63, and I have to say, the M74 is much better balanced than the 03 and 63. I don’t know if it is more accurate, but I do like the M74 a little more for shooting. For my collection, I really like my M03. I have a 1st year rifle and I was lucky enough to find a nice one on Guns International.

Bought some ammo and have yet to shoot it. It’s cooling off, so a trip to the range is coming up.     Big Larry

Nice looking rifles Larry. I always enjoy watching you go broke. This addiction is why I work 2 jobs.

Larry,

May not really be a parts clean up. I think that by the 50’s they were making barrels in batches to cover more than a years production, so all dates don’t jive. But then it is a end of production gun so… Who knows.

FWIW, Most of the late 1955 Model 74’s I have surveyed have 1952 dated barrels.

Saw a couple of 74’s at the Lone Tree, CO Cabela’s. One had been refinished and the other seemed to have mechanical issues. Some day I’ll find one worth dragging home. Figured you might enjoy some company on your journey towards bankruptcy. 😉

Picked up two last week. A well used model 69a and a 72 (not A) . Pictures when we get some good natural light and the threat of rain goes.

Probably a little known fact, there were more pre “A”s made than “A”s. I like the later rifles as they are grooved for scopes and everyone knows how much I hate Swiss Cheese.   Big Larry
