Gentlemen,

I posted this over at RFC but got zero response so I thought I would try here.

I have a few quick but obscure questions that are hopefully easy to answer. I am looking for the Winchester catalog description for the early Model 52 rifles between 1919 and 1930. Houze has a very nice table in his 52 book (appendix 5) but it does not include the information for the early Model 52s for some reason.

#1 – I found G5201R in the 1923 catalog but not in the 1928. Does anyone know when the G5201R was discontinued?

#2 – I found G5202S (yes, “S” suffix) in the 1923 catalog which states it came with telescope sight bases. It is not listed in the 1928 catalog either. When was that catalog number dropped?

#3 – G5204R is listed in the 1928 catalog although it is shown on the Houze list to have been introduced in 1931? The earlier G5204R has the military style stock, is it the same rifle except with an updated stock and different front sight or is it a different (duplicated) catalog model?

#4 – And, lastly, do any of the Winchester sales catalogs between 1920 and 1930 list any other Model 52 catalog order numbers other than G5201R, G5202S, and G5204R?  If nothing else, can someone check the 1920, 1921, 1922, 1924, 1929 and 1930 catalogs to see what 52’s are listed?  I don’t have a copy of those catalogs.

Thanks in advance for any/all help!

Jeff,

I have Catalog No. 83 (1925), and it only lists the G5202S.

That helps narrow it down, so G5201R was dropped between 1923 and 1925.

Thanks

Jeff,

To the best of my knowledge, Winchester did not publish a 1924 catalog. My catalog listing list jumps from 1923 to 1925.

Yes, I have never seen a 1924 either.  Wonder why they skipped 1924, no new models introduced that year?

There were two new models introduced in 1924, the Model 53 and the Model 55, both in June of that year. They were not listed until the 1925 catalog.

Good clues, thanks!  1924 was not a particularly bad year for Winchester, gotta wonder why they skipped a catalog year.  I know they skipped a few other years but presumably for other reasons.

I found a Houze reference that indicates the G5201R was discontinued in 1924 but still cannot find the date the G5202S was discontinued or when the G5204R was introduced……

Seewin, any idea?
