I have recently come across a Winchester Model 90 (marked). When I look up the serial number it indicates year made as 1910. However, I have read Winchester changed the model designation of this rifle from 1890 to 90 sometime well after that year. Am wondering if anyone can shed some light on why I seem to have a model 90 with a serial number when Winchester was designating these rifles as Model 1890. Thanks.
The most likely answer to your question is that the barrel is not original to the receiver (a later replacement). It was in the year 1919 (late in that year) that the Model designation was changed from “1890” to “90”. Is there a “P” inside an oval stamp on the top of the barrel? If so, that indicates a mail order replacement barrel.
