Hello everyone. I am a shooter and collector of mostly US military rifles. I have in my collection a US Model 75 that was reworked at Letterkenney and surplused through the Director of Civilian Marksmanship sometime between 1965 to 1968. I bought this at a gun show 11 years ago for about $500 or so in trade. It’s in the original shipping box and I have never fired it. It has the magazine, sling and target sights. I want to sell it and I don’t know what to ask.

Some other military Winchesters I have but am not selling are a Model 70 target rifle I bought from the CMP auction I think in 2008. Late 1950s military contract of the type used as sniper rifles in the early Vietnam era. This one was probably used in service rifle competitions. And a Model 52D I bought from the CMP through their general rifle sales around 2003. Probably used in smallbore competitions. I have shot both of these.

I also have great-grandfather’s Model 24 in 20 gauge. I used to take this turkey hunting!

Hi Jeffrey,

Regarding the Model 75, the value depends entirely upon condition and the extent in which the rifle was overhauled at Letterkenney.  If the original blue was parkerized/refinished and the stock sanded and/or the comb lowered it reduces the collector value substantially.  A refinished USGI Model 75 with sights sells in the $400-$450 range.  If the rifle was simply cleaned/tuned at Letterkenney and retains the original Winchester blued finish and stock finish in good condition the value would be in the $900 range.  Your DCM paperwork and box help with either value by at least an additional $100-$150.  Pictures would help us give you a better evaluation.

The CMP 52D rifles are fairly common and bring anywhere from $700-$1200 depending upon condition and included sights.  The CMP rifles tended to be a bit on the scruffy side with dings and scratches which are reflected in the overall value.  Again, pictures would help with the evaluation.

I do not know enough about the Model 70 Target or the Model 24 to offer an opinion, sorry.

Hi Jeffrey,

Thanks for the photo, that helps.  If only the receiver is parkerized then it indicates the barrel was removed during the refinish process and may likely have been replaced.  Also, your stock has been heavily sanded and refinished, the original stock comb has been shaved down.  Your rifle should also have a straight (downturned) bolt handle instead of the later (post-WWII) swept rearward handle which probably means it was replaced also.  And, if I can see the picture clearly, the arm on the rear Lyman 57 is the very late type with the coarse cross knurling on the knobs and directional arrows which means it is not original either.

Based on the refinish and replaced components your rifle is worth about $450 plus a premium for the original paperwork and box.

I saw a similar rifle for sale/trade in Virginia recently (serial #20729), is that yours?
