Hi Everyone,

I am new to this forum and was hoping someone can help me with some information regarding a Model 62 I have just acquired ? I have tried to check manufacturing date but the result is coming up unknown, the serial number is registered as 850897. I purchased the rifle as a gift for my son who has always wanted one of the rifles and it would be fantastic if I could provide him as much information as possible.

Thank You

Mike

Hello Mike,

What you actually have is a late production “parts clean-up” Model 90. The receiver frame was manufactured in October, 1938. Winchester used Model 62 barrels (and other parts) to assemble the unused Model 90 receiver frames still in inventory. I have been working on a research survey documenting precisely the type of rifle you have. Can you send me clear detailed pictures of the rifle?

Hi Bert,

I have some photos of the rifle for you but I am having trouble trying to uplaod them. I have tried the insert/edit button but no luck so far. Seems like I can not drag and drop from my desktop either, if you have some tips I would be obliged or I could send via email, FB, messenger etc. Please let me know what works best for you.

Cheers

Mike,

Pictures received… thank you very much.

Based on the configuration of the rifle, I have classified it as a Model 62/90 hybrid.  It is a Model 62 in all respects except for the receiver frame assembly, which is a Model 90.

Thanks Bert,

I appreciate the information, I know you said the reciever was built Oct ’38 but is there any chance we can identify the manufacture date of the finished rifle? I really appreciate your information, to know the rifle’s history is fantastic I’m so pleased to have had the opportunity to acquire it recently.

Thank You

Mike

Mike,

It is not possible to determine exactly when the rifle was fully assembled.  That stated, there is a 2-digit year number stamped on the bottom of the barrel near the receiver frame (see the attached picture).  That date marking tells us when the barrel was manufactured, and the earliest possible year that the rifle was assembled.
