Hello All,
Schwing notes in his Model 61 reference book on page 58 that the use of the collared magazine end ceased during 1934. But, I have noticed in my survey data that the collared tube can be found as late as 1937 and one small SN group in 1938. Soooo… If your Model 61 rifles have a serial number of less than 48000 can you please pull them out and take a look and then post or email me the SN and which collar end is present on the rifle?
I greatly appreciate the help as always

Michael,
I’ve got an early one I will check tomorrow after I return from work. I can’t recall offhand if it was collared or not.
Kind of funky with Winchester……With the 1890’s they went from uncollared to collared. Vise versa with the 61’s. Now you have me wondering about the 62’s. Were any of the 62’s collared? Are the mag tubes interchangeable between 61’s and 62’s???
See what ya started here…….
Best,
Erin

Erin,
Sorry for being such a trouble maker and stirring up a hornet’s nest of questions that can only be answered by countless hours of gun handling and looking!! The sacrifices we go through for the quest of knowledge. With regard to the Model 62 magazine tubes being collared or not, the early guns were in fact collared. But that will have to be a little project for some one else to work on. See Schwing Vol 2, page 163.
