Wondering if anyone here has some knowledge on the Model 60a sporting with 23” barrel. All these that I have seen have a proud take down screw and this one is flush like later models. The stock looks period to the gun. It is thin like you want to see them just doesn’t have a proud take down screw.

I just looked at three of mine and the screw is sticking down on all three. Maybe someone changed it, or, it is a very late rifle, but that being the case, the M67 followed this rifle and the early M67’s have the screw hanging down. Does your rifle have the cutout on the bolt for the late safety? I have seen many variations of the M60 and M60-A. All 3 of mine are different. Big Larry

i was looking at this at a LGS with interest in buying it but the take down screw has me concerned. I first thought maybe it was put together late in production but it has all hints of being early. It has the early bolt without the safety window. The barrel date is 31 and 23” barrel. If you look at the pic of the barrel address you’ll see the wood is riding low like the early thin stocks did. Maybe the take down screws not a big deal but I like em to be right.

That stock appears to be from a post-war Model 67. It does not look original to the rifle.
The Model 60 and 60A stock had a butt plate marked “Winchester Trademark” The post-war Model 67 stock butt plates did not say “Trademark”.

I don’t think it is a post war 67 stock. I have attached two pics of the top looking down of a 60A and post war 67. It is my understanding that when Winchester went to the flush take down screw they added material to the stock so it made them taller and thicker. Maybe someone just changed the screw because they didn’t like it being proud. Take a look at the pics and give me your opinion.
Thanks Mike
Hi Mike,
Do you have a picture of the butt plate logo? That would really help to determine if it is a pre-1935 stock.
Thanks,

I think it could be bought for around 300.
If it checks out, that may be a good price. I paid more for mine, but it is a 95%er. I wonder if all the stock screws are the same. The M67,M68, and M69, all have those proud screws on the early rifles. Listen to what JWA says. I doubt there is anyone who knows more about 22 Winchesters. Big Larry

it does not have the trademark on the butt Plate I knew then that the plate was post 1934. I have a 60A with the finger grooves and this stock has the same feel in the hand. I have a few post 1935 pre war and post war 67’s 68’s and 69’s and those stocks fill up your hand and ride higher on the barrel. Every 60A that I have seen has a Fore end that tapers down to what I call a bullet. This one is different as it is more squared off with somewhat of a taper. It does not ride high on the barrel like the later stocks do. I am confused with this one as I have never seen another stock like it. I want to add the non finger groove stocked 60A to my collection but if this one doesn’t check out I will pass it up.
Mike.
Hi Mike,
It definitely does not check out, I would pass on that one.

Ha Ha. I just went to look at the plates on my M60 and M60-A, and they are both in a shadow box and I cannot make out the buttplates. So, I poked into my safe and pulled out my M60-A Target Rifle. DUH !!! They have steel un marked buttplates. Big Larry![]()
HA HA Big Larry
Sorry this post has you in an uproar. When I see a Model 67 either at a gun show or LGS and it has the grooved stock I always look at the Butt Plate and if it has the Trademark then I check to see if it has a round firing pin. haven’t see one yet but someday I might just get lucky.

This is why I always get in trouble for opening my mouth. The Ha Ha was not the post, it was me taking the time to get into my safe to check the buttplate on my 60-A Target. DUH, they all have steel buttplates as far as I know. I am NOT in an uproar!! Big Larry

The Model 67 and 68 used the same stock. The stock that replaced the finger groove one had the blunt fore end. The last one you pictured looks more like a post war stock.Jay

I own a post war model 67 and the stock that is on the 60a is similar but not the same. It has the tapered fore end but dimensionally it is thin like all the early proud take down screw stocks. I got out my post war 67 and compared it to my last pic and I fold the mystery continues. The nest time I am at the gun shop I will get more pics of the stock.
