I have just acquired a model 59. Unfortunately the wood has been refinished. I want to refinish it as close as I can get to original finish. Couple questions?
what specie of wood was used?
what was used to finish the wood from factory( stained or just shellac etc)?

You need to first tell us which Winchester Model 59 you are asking about… the .22 rim fire bolt-action rifle, or the semi-auto shotgun?

Lacquer mixed with stain, sprayed. Lacquer or varnish stains applied by brush tend to streak, in my experience. Think wood was gum, but may be wrong.
