Mike, I think you’re right about the 75 Sporting and I was looking for one when the bedraggled 52C fell into my lap.If it weren’t for my need to get more safe room I’d still like to own a 75.
While we are comparing the two, let me add in the Model 72, which has the same, side-mounted magazine release button, and ask a question. Are the buttons themselves plated as the rifles come from the factory or are the examples Ive seen just blue-worn? Anybody?
Bill,
The Model 72 has a tube magazine so there is no side-mounted release. Did you mean the Model 69? It does have the same release as the 75 and regardless of model, they were all blued but do appear shinier when worn.

Jeff, Thanks. Yes, I did mean the Model 69. The reason I asked is because the 9700 series 52C for sale at $7500 has an obviously worn, refinished or waxed, plastic buttplate but a faultless and shiny blue-black bolt knob and floorplate. The magazine release button shows bright metal, the same as on my obviously, albeit carefully, used #99076C.
I need to go back to the Guns International page and see if the seller specifically represents the finishes are factory original or only implies it with an outrageous price..

Zeb-
Hadn’t paid much attention to the magazine release button but I happen to have a few Models 75 in the rack in front of me at the moment and the button on my pristine Model 75 Sporting is indeed a rich, dark blue while a more experienced, shall we say, 75 Target nearby has lost much of its original blue. Another Target model shows a good amount of blue, but a little worn. Good eye.

Mike, I appreciate your confirming the fact. So many of the box magazine Winchester rimfires with that side-mounted magazine release have bare metal buttons that I’d come to think they were nickel-plated, like some of the the muzzle crowns! In the course of photographing my new-to-me 48F (courtesy of BRP) just mounted on my 52C, I happened to notice what looks like a lock washer that surrounds the plunger assembly and is visible below the button. It is a dull blue. Hmmmmm.
Just because I’m paranoid doesn’t mean They aren’t after me. It’s to the point I’m suspicious of ANY bolt handle that doesn’t show just a little blue wear — save only those in Lou’s collection, of course.
By the way. Our honorable and hard working TGCA secretary called me consumed with guilt and I had to reassure her she was still among the Angels as far as I am concerned. She’s forwarded everything post haste and all is well. I look forward to reading your article.

I envy folks with an eye for detail, will try to take notice of that in the future as it might be helpful in determining authenticity. Elise is indeed a wonderful lady and her husband Gary always brings goodies to the show. I bought a couple boxes of 22 Winchester Auto for my Model 1903 from him. I had a good time researching and writing that article about the recovered Mississippi Rifle, hope you enjoy it.
